How XenServer works

Citrix XenServer utilizes the powerful open-source Project Xen Hypervisor. XenServer is designed for efficient management of Windows and Linux Virtual Machines (VMs) and delivers cost-effective server consolidation and business continuity. 

What is the difference between XenServer and Xen Project?

Xen Project is an open source project run and managed by the Linux foundation.  XenServer utilizes the Xen Project hypervisor as a core component of its architecture to provide stable and elastic abstraction of the underlying infrastructure. Xen Project technology is widely acknowledged as the fastest and most secure virtualization platform in the industry.

In addition to the Xen Project hypervisor, Citrix XenServer includes:

• Control domain (dom0): The Control Domain, also called Domain 0 or dom0, is a secure, privileged VM that runs the XenServer management tool stack known as xapi. In addition, dom0 runs the physical device drivers for networking, storage, etc.
• Citrix XenCenter: XenCenter is the Windows-native graphical user interface for managing Citrix XenServer environments.
• VM Templates: XenServer includes templates for popular operating systems allowing easy creation and deployment of these systems as VMs.
